Grid-Tie Solar

Grid-Tie Solar

Basics

Grid-tie solar electric systems are the most common solar energy systems, the most efficient, and usually the least expensive type of system for your home or commercial property. 95% of all solar PV systems installed today are grid-tie systems. Grid-tie solar energy systems connect directly to the electric utility grid and do not have battery backup. The systems push the solar energy through your electric service panel into your home, you consume the solar energy first, if excess energy is created it will go back into the grid and provide you energy credits, and if additional energy is needed your home will pull energy from the grid, your local utility company.

Components of a Typical System

  • Solar Panels (Photovoltaic)

  • Racking System

  • Inverter to turn DC power to AC power (Central Inverter or Micro inverters)

  • PV Wire and Conduit to connect the system to the household breaker panel or service panel

  • Disconnect Switches (on/off switch used when repairing your system or home electrical system)

  • Some utility companies require a 2nd Solar Meter to be added so you can track your solar production the way the utility tracks your system.

  • Data Monitoring package to monitor your system production in your home and on the Internet.

Mounting Options

  • Roof Mounted

  • Ground Mounted

  • Pole Mounted

  • Pergola (Deck Roofs)

  • Gazebos

  • Car Ports

  • We can customize a solar energy system to match your needs at your property

Roof Compatibility

  • Shingle Roof

  • Clay Tile Roof

  • Metal Roofs (standing seam, corrugated, metal shingles, etc)

  • Concrete Tile Roof

  • Flat Roof

  • The condition or your roof, roof warranty, and aesthetic preferences will all be taken into consideration during our consultation. We offer panels with varying frame colors such as our all black solar panel as well as our standard metal frame solar panels.

Homeowner's Associations

Homeowners Associations should be consulted before beginning installation however a bill was recently passed that makes it hard for HOAs to block solar! This is huge news for Texas. The bill is available here.

Solar Community will work with you and your HOA to ensure a smooth process and quick approval. We have been very successful at partnering with communities to show the long-term value of solar throughout the region.

Grid-tie solar energy systems do not operate during electric utility power outages but we can always add a battery backup system to provide greater stability to your electrical needs, even when grid power goes out! Click here to learn more about Battery Backup Systems.

Don't Forget the 30% Federal Tax Credit

  • 30% of total cost, with no upper limit

  • Must be “placed in service” by December 31, 2016

  • Available on principal home or second home

  • New and existing homes

  • Photovoltaic systems must provide electricity for the residence and must meet applicable fire and electrical code requirements.

  • Solar Hot Water heating systems must generate at least half of the energy from the sun. The system must also be certified by the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC). The credit includes installation costs.
